Who should attend?

Work equipment (systems, equipment, vehicles, facilities, buildings) must, by design, manufacture and installation ensure so far as is reasonably practicable, that they are without risks to health and safety. This is a legal requirement and all those involved with engineering products need to understand their role in ensuring safety; failure to do so is harmful to people, illegal and damaging to your business.

Course outline

  • What is Product Safety? Introduces commonly-used product safety key words and illustrates the difference between health and safety and product safety. The focus is on the primary drivers for product safety, highlighting incidents across different industries.
  • Hazard Identification Looks at the critical first step in dealing with the safety of a product, gaining a good understanding of the hazards associated with its use and how harm can occur. Several commonly-used hazard identification and hazard analysis techniques are covered, with taster sessions and guidance for selecting methods for different applications.
  • Hazard Analysis Building on the previous step which identified the hazards, this section explains how the hazards are then analysed to understand the potential underlying causes, contributing factors and pathways for the progression to accidents and harm.
  • Eliminate Hazards and Control Risks This section investigates how potential risk reduction measures are identified and how to decide which are “Reasonably Practicable” and should therefore be implemented. This is in accordance with codes of practice and a guiding principle throughout industrialised countries and industry sectors.
  • Accept, Monitor and Review This section focuses on the criteria and responsibilities for accepting the residual risk and discusses the through-life procedures for monitoring and reviewing product safety. The client-customer boundaries (scope of responsibility) are also discussed.
  • Ensuring Safety Finally, by reflecting on the key processes above, the essential components of product safety management systems and organisations are developed. Key functions such as safety leadership, governance, active and reactive monitoring are introduced, as well as the concept of a “safety case”.

Learning objectives

At the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Awareness of the current legislation pertaining to product design and operation in the workplace.
  • An understanding of your responsibilities as a supplier of products.
  • Awareness of what products are and their typical applications when used within the business or sold as a product.
  • Understanding of the product design and life cycle,
  • knowledge of the typical hazards
  • cause, effects and consequence of risks associated with designing and operation products. Understanding the term “So Far As Reasonably Practical (SFARP)” in relation to the Health and Safety workplace legislation.

Reviews

Great course, SOA Safety staff very friendly and easy to communicate with, made course choice very easy, would recommend SOA Safety to anyone else. Jim’s course is just what is required, since I have had not much health and safety experience, the way Jim puts it across is very understandable which you can relate to your own working experience.

We would like to express our appreciation for the hard work and dedication you and your team at SOA Safety have afforded us here at Manchester Community Health. We know the timescales and notice periods for changes have been challenging but your team have always managed to accommodate our needs. The delivery of over 200 courses to NHS staff in excess of 1500 over a 2-month period is extremely impressive. The content and presentation of the training provided has been of a high standard and carried out professionally at all times, confirmed in positive staff feedback.

Excellent, best first aid trainer I have ever had.

I came today under duress! But the deliver was engaging and informative, not as dull as I anticipated! Has definitely made me more aware :-)

Informative and eye opening

Very good course, Tutor very knowledgeable, class room had a good easy going feel

Good mix of candidates and chance to see different industries. Good practical examples.

It was a refresher for me and I found some good fresh material/instructions. I found it was presented well too keep my interest all the way through.

Enjoyed the course, well worth taking

Information passed in a logical and interesting manner.

Tutor had a good delivery and put course delegates at ease. This led to a good learning level within the group. I hope to attend courses here again.

Putting out fires it has taught me how to use the equipment.

Interactive - Group work incorporated and not just lectured at! Trainer - he's funny! Knowledgeable - I learned a lot.

Good environment and excellent food.

The NEBOSH course was just what I needed. I didn’t have much previous health and safety experience, but the way the trainer delivered the course made it very understandable and relevant to my own working experience.

It gives me great pleasure to write a testimonial in support of SOA Safety. Here at the Beeches Consulting Centre, we recently had a complete review and overhaul of our Fire Policy. We are a small organisation. SOA Safety was recommended to us by a much larger organisation for which they already provide advice. SOA's work for us was extremely thoroughly and meticulously carried out. They made themselves available at all times to deal with queries. They were patient, efficient and highly professional. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending their services.

The training provided by the SOA team was exemplary in that it hit the mark from scope and content perspectives but moreover was delivered by real experts who clearly not only know the theory but have experience in applying the concepts to complex systems.

Using extinguishers, Alan's sense of humour.

It is a very difficult topic to make interesting, however I feel Joe achieved this today. Well done + thank you!

Jim presented the information that was easily understood and made things relevant to mine and other class participants employment. I felt this helped with my understanding of the information.

The course was fun and interesting

Brilliant Course, always enjoyed coming here for First Aid Training. Thank You.

Good atmosphere, friendly, informative, excellent lunch.

Excellent course, very well delivered by Alan.

Excellent presentation, informative, increased confidence and knowledge.

It was presented interestingly, Tutor was very animated.

Informative and it really makes you think.

The standard of the deliverables was very high, and I was extremely pleased with their engineering and professional approach; it was clear from the material that it had been produced with an expert eye and a full understanding of the product.

The presentation was engaging throughout whilst being very informative.

I would just like to add my thanks to yourself, Jim and the SOA team for running the Nebosh Fire Certificate course, which was extremely well presented, interesting and informative - both the full week and the revision day and also the on-site practical assessment + the excellent quality meals provided!! I would highly recommend anyone interested in any aspect of Health and Safety to take this or any other Nebosh course with SOA.

I took part in the HSE 5 Steps to Risk Assessment course on 10th April 2012. I really liked the way the instructor Keith Dacre made the course very interactive.

Instructor made the course fast, clear and fun.

The service from SOA for our extinguisher maintenance at all our 4 sites was conducted in a professional manner and at our convenience. The final report was comprehensive and to the point. The service was excellent value for money and we also took advantage of the Fire Warden course discount vouchers.

SOA Safety has been providing fire safety advice and training across NHS Manchester and Salford over the past 3 years. Once we amalgamated we have had SOA safety completing all the Fire Risk assessments for both area within NHS Property Services and over the 3 years we have had approximately 300 Fire Risk assessments completed , fire awareness sessions for over 3000 staff, numerous fire warden training and fire drills at all our premises. We have also utilised SOA Safety for all our Health and Safety inspections across the NHS. Whenever requested SOA Safety has provided immediate advice and assistance when requested.

We would like to express our appreciation for the hard work and dedication you and your team at SOA have afforded us here at Manchester Community Health. We know the timescales and notice periods for changes have been challenging but your team have always managed to accommodate our needs.

I recently attended a Fire Warden training course ran by SOA Safety. It was informative but more importantly it was hands on. Especially with the fire extinguishers and the smoke corridor. This brings the whole issue of fire safety to the fore front of your mind. Trainer, facilities and food all excellent. It was a very well-run course and I will recommend SOA Safety to anyone wanting to train Fire Wardens or Fire Marshalls for their school.

I liked putting the fires out.

Trying out the extinguishers gave me more confidence.

Everything - this was my first health and safety course, so I was very interested.

Clare the instructor has so much knowledge and was able to fully respond to every question. She was fun and friendly. The course has good scenarios for us to act out. The excellent way Clare delivered the course and the obvious depth of knowledge and love of subject, really made me enjoy the course. Clare made the course fun, as well as us learning important first aid information. Rather than being sat down to read books, Clare got up and demonstrated and corrected us when we were doing it wrong. I feel like I can remember the clear majority without looking at my notes. Clare could not have done anything better in my opinion, she made us feel confident and not as though we were stupid.

I enjoyed the awareness the course brings, there are a lot of instances regarding fire that I did not appreciate.

The relaxed atmosphere whilst learning.

Opportunity to use extinguishers, the most frightening thing is ignorance. Feel confident now.

Great central location of venue. Enthusiastic course leader who clearly knows what he is talking about.

It was very informative and interesting.

What SOA did with the PowerPoint's was very good and refreshingly new to our business. They really brought the subject to life and it was great how the slides built up the system from first principles to the finished article, bringing in essential engineering and safety detail that demonstrated how and why the design developed as it did into the final product.

The course has given me a good insight into where H+S fits in to auditing structure will be undertaking an McBrides.

Alan presented the course in an informative and entertaining way.

Very impressed! I have never been to the centre before for training. Training very good and informative

Presented well with humour and seriousness.

I would just like to say that I was thoroughly impressed with the standard of work done by Jon with the maintenance of our fire extinguishers, mounting them on the wall (which I had never been advised by the company that did the maintenance prior to using yourselves, that this is a legal requirement) and the fire risk assessment. I will happily recommend your company to anyone requiring the services of your company.

Paul was an excellent trainer.

I was surprised because I just expected to hear the same information as last time, however as well as this I learnt quite a bit that I didn't know. Pleasantly surprised :-)

The delivery of the course, with the right balance of information, visual aids, examples and group work. Great trainer, very helpful and lightened the days with stories and humour.

Plenty of participation, practical hands on with a range of extinguishers.

I have been on more than one all day course and many half day refreshers. The course today was interesting. To the point and I gained knowledge. Very good.

Well-presented including good mix of practical examples/situations. Good balance/variety of delegates.

All aspects workbook, and practical work. It furthered my knowledge.

The practical was very useful as it prepared you for real life use if you need it. Real life cases for examples made the information more realistic.

I have found SOA safety and their staff to be very thorough, professional and friendly in all the services that they have provided and now with NHS Property Services taking over from NHS Manchester and Salford we are very happy to be working alongside them this year to ensure our fire safety is maintained at an excellent standard.

The fire training was very good, much better than previous years. The trainer was excellent and very interesting.

Very knowledgeable trainer, excellent course.

Overall very good course, could save lives now

We would like to express our appreciation for the hard work and dedication you and your team at SOA have afforded us here at Manchester Community Health. We know the timescales and notice periods for changes have been challenging but your team have always managed to accommodate our needs.

Very good course, Tutor very knowledgeable, class room had a good easy going feel.

An otherwise dry and difficult subject was made interesting, fun and enjoyable. The information presented was up to date, factual and relative . The trainer made us feel comfortable to participate. This is the best training course I have been on.

Informative, Funny, adequate breaks, learned a lot more than usual.

I’d just like for you to pass on my greatest appreciation firstly to your office manager Eleanor, she has been very helpful from start to finish in assisting me with a payment plan for the course and her communication really has been fantastic. Secondly to Jim Printy, the guy is a legend and a very good teacher. I will be using you again (Hopefully not for GC1-2-or 3 again) and will definitely recommend SOA safety for training.

It was very informative and well presented. Really enjoyed it.

I have enjoyed updating my HandS information. I will be looking into our current Risk Assessment and updating where applicable.

Paul was brilliant, showing the videos and explained everything then let us use the fire extinguishers which was totally different.

Did two fire warden courses before with different employers. This was longest, most informative and had practical. Better to simulate, it gave me the confidence in the event of a fire.

The fact that Paul made the education fun so for me this always gels well.

The delivery, style, anecdotes all made it so much easier to deal with the intensity of the material needing to be delivered. Jim - excellent mix of serious and fun. Well done I looked forward to every morning.

All employees who attended the course commented on the high standard of training given, and the presentation was enjoyable. However, the incident command and control were exceptional in that the delegates were able to relate it to their own work situation in a practical manner which they could understand and appreciate.

Pauline Jones saw me this morning and wanted to say that she thoroughly enjoyed the course, food was excellent, and Claire was brilliant.

It was a refresher for me and I found some good fresh material/instructions. I found it was presented well too keep my interest all the way through.

I enjoyed the friendly and easy approach Joe had because it made it more watchable and I could take it in.

I took part in the Emergency first aid at Work course on 13th March 2012. It was a fun course with information presented clearly. The trainer was very approachable and guided us through the tasks with plenty of encouragement, advice and good humour. I’d definitely be happy to train with SOA Safety again.
