Fire Safety Engineering

Fire safety engineering can be used to satisfy legal requirements and industry safety standards. These include the RRFSO, Approved Document B of the Building Regulations, Germanischer Lloyd Rules & Guidelines, British Standards and Approved Codes of Practice.

Fire Risk Assessment

Our Approach

The fire safety engineering approach can be used to assess the performance of the design in its context, deviating from the prescriptive non-contextual nature of the standards and regulations. The safety measures are then achieved with meeting business objectives without compromising safety over design.

We work with you at all stages of the project from inception, through design to the operational fire safety management.

We have applied our expertise to support clients in the Defence, Nuclear, Marine, Oil & Gas and Commercial industries.

Our engineers apply, when appropriate modern computer simulation techniques to resolve conflicts with prescriptive standards and identify cost-effective solutions that will satisfy the statutory bodies.

Utilisation and Tools

Our engineers have used fire safety engineering principles to:

  • Increase the occupancy numbers and the size of compartments
  • Omit the installation of sprinklers
  • Extend travel distances for evacuating occupants
  • Support the novel designs (i.e. Submarines, Atrium)

The above utilisation of fire safety engineering has been achieved using:

  • Fire dynamics & analyses
  • Structural response analysis
  • Fire growth and fire spread simulations
  • Smoke spread simulations
  • Evacuation simulations

The law

The law changed in october 2006, abolishing fire certificates and placing the responsiblity with the business/premises owner
