Course summary

The NEBOSH General Certificate is highly recommended entry level course to the NEBOSH National Diploma qualification. The syllabus consists of three units: focusing on risk management (Unit NGC1: Management of Health and Safety), safety (Unit GC2: Controlling workplace hazards) and a workplace-based practical assignment (Unit GC3). These qualifications are widely taken as a first step towards a career in heath and safety and are accepted by IOSH – the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health – in meeting the academic requirements for Technician Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH).

Who should attend?

Managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues. Many people take the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a first step in a career in health and safety.

  • There are two assessment elements: (1) Written - formal exams: NGC1 and GC2 (2hrs each) and (2) Practical - workplace-based practical assignment (GC3).

Learning objectives

At the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Unit NGC1
  • understand the scope, nature & legal framework of occupational health and safety
  • understand the moral, legal & financial reasons for promoting health and safety
  • knowledge of the key elements of a health and safety management system
  • knowledge of the legal and organisational health and safety roles & responsibilities of employers, managers, supervisors, employees and other relevant parties
  • understanding of the principles of risk assessment and skills in identifying the hazards
  • understanding of risk reduction, safe system of work and permit to work system
  • Unit GC2
  • knowledge of the hazards that may cause injuries to all persons in the workplace
  • Skills to identify the general requirements, hazards and controls for electricity, work equipment, hand tools, noise, vibration, substances hazardous to health, disposal of waste, ionising radiation, manual handling and working at height activities
  • ability to explain the basic principles of fire prevention, detection and means of escape
  • understand the causes and effects of stress and violence at work
  • skills to identify the main hazards and controls of construction and demolition work
  • Unit GC3
  • skills to carry out, a safety inspection of a workplace with appropriate remedial actions
  • ability to prepare a report, explaining why such action is needed (including reference to possible breaches of legislation) and identifying, with due consideration of reasonable practicability, the remedial measures that should be implemented
